Musical Themed Costumed Life Drawing at Akin Lakeshore - TONIGHT!

Tonight (February 29) at Akin Lakeshore, 2970 Lakeshore Blvd West / 6:00pm - 8:30pm / $15 per person / some materials provided

Join artist Erin Panjer tonight for an evening of music and drawing. The theme is “Leap Year: Leap into action, take the initiative”. This session is meant to create the environment to capture meaningful human expression, and inspire the models and the artists in turn, creating a positive feedback loop of active emotional attention and effort - While coming off as fun and laid back! 

Getting there by TTC:
Akin Lakeshore is a 3 minute walk from the Lakeshore Blvd West at Fifth St TTC stop which services the 145 Bus and 301 / 501 Streetcars. Parking:
There is paid parking located at 2903 Lakeshore Blvd West which is approximately a 2 minute walk from the studio. There is also a Green P Parking Lot located at 120 Sixth St, south of Lakeshore Blvd West which is approximately a 3 minute walk from the studio.

Accessibility:Akin Lakeshore is located on the third floor of the building and there is no elevator. Akin regrets this barrier to access. There is a ramp entrance to the building and then 38 steps to access the studios on the third floor. There are 3 gender neutral washrooms in the studio space. One of the bathrooms has grab bars, the other two do not, and the toilets are not raised. The doorway to the kitchen is narrow, measuring approximately 24 inches across.

About Jessica Hiemstra
Jessica is an award winning multi-disciplinary artist whose work has appeared in galleries all over the world, among them Australia, Sierra Leone, Edmonton and Vancouver. She is also an accomplished showroom artist and set designer with experience creating everything from tidal waves using shims to giant iridescent octopuses. She likes using reclaimed house paint, discarded objects and single-use plastic. Since 1998 Jessica has published three full-length collections of poetry and edited numerous anthologies of poetry and creative non-fiction. Jessica likes what Paul Klee once said about art – that one eye sees, the other feels. Jessica works in a variety of mediums on many kinds of surfaces - from watercolour and thread on paper to acrylic on acetate to plastic bags sewn into canvas. One of the things people often ask Jessica is “what’s the difference between all the things you do?” Jessica doesn’t distinguish much between her mediums. She chooses the best medium for exploring whichever question, concern or exaltation is most pressing to her in the moment - from delight in the body to sorrow and anger at how poorly we care for our world and each other. Sometimes she uses words, sometimes pencils, sometimes paint. In 2019 she started tearing her paintings and stitching them back together. Toronto’s most experiential art and music pop-up venue is coming to town this summer!

In partnership with Universal Music Canada, Toronto’s most talented Visual Artists & Designers will transform an abandoned grocery store into an immersive and interactive art-maze called Fairland Funhouse.

THE EXPERIENCE

This place is all about make-believe and art that you can be in. At Fairland Funhouse, the adventure begins by jumping through a large donut portal at an old school diner. You might also find yourself at an interdimensional hotel hidden beneath a magical underwater world.

Let’s just say this is not a traditional exhibition!

Expect to be transported into magical realms that meld art, music, and tech.

THE HISTORY

Located in the heart of Kensington Market in downtown Toronto, Fairland is an old grocery store that has existed in the market since the 1950s. This iconic location has a history of doing pop-ups and live rooftop shows during Pedestrian Sundays.

This summer, guests will be able to explore the art-filled funhouse, catch a secret rooftop concert, and attend the best parties of the summer.

WHY?

We’re a collective of designers, innovators, and creatives wanting to design experiential environments that inspire a sense of play and exploration, through multisensory storytelling and interactive art.

Today many value and crave creative expression and experience over possessions. Our mission is to push the boundaries of social environments, and create an experience that captivates and provokes imagination.

Camp Wavelenght Call for Submissions

Camp Wavelength, Toronto’s Island Slumber Party is back! Presented by Wavelength Music, Toronto’s non-profit, DIY community hub, Camp Wavelength 2017 is seeking the best in independent music and the arts from Canada and around the world. 2017 Theme is “Total Eclipse of the Heart” because this year’s festival dates line up with an actual SOLAR ECLIPSE (on the Monday, August 21). Things are going to get cosmic!

Wavelength is seeking submissions from artists in the following disciplines, VISUAL & MEDIA ARTS, DANCE & PERFORMANCE, GAMES & ACTIVITIES and MUSIC.

Submission Deadline is April 14, 2017

There is no submission fee. All accepted artists will be paid an honourarium to participate. All visual & media arts projects must work outside and during daylight and nighttime hours. All submissions will be evaluated, but due to very limited space, only a small number of submissions will be accepted. Only successful applicants will be contacted, no later than May 15.

Camp Wavelength takes over the grounds of Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island, transforming it into a magical dreamland of creativity and community. Camp Wavelength is the alternative to the summer music-festival experience, part beach vacation, part sleepaway camp, and part arts happening.

Call For Vendors: Dundas West Street Festival, June 8

Hello friends & fellow makers of beautiful things!

I have been asked by the Dundas West BIA (Business Improvement Association) to organize a ‘handmade market’ to hit the streets as part of the first ever Dundas West Fest, taking place on June 8^th 2013.

The Dundas West Fest is a one-day street festival that will shut down Dundas St. West from Lansdowne St. to Roxton Rd, just east of Ossington. The festival will run from 11am–10pm, offering a full day of music, art, kids’ activities, food & drink, extended patios, shopping and more!

The location is prime. This neighbourhood has become a pretty hip hub offering some of the city’s best in art and design, as well as tons of great vintage shops, a bunch of trendy and delicious brunch spots, and, most importantly, an awesome community that genuinely appreciates and supports locally made goods and independently run businesses like ours!

My goal is to bring together a group of unique but complimentary makers, creators and entrepreneurs for a day-long street market called:

By Hand.

With Heart.

                                   

I am reaching out to you because I believe that you have a sharp brand and well executed product that I know you stand behind with pride and passion. The focus is on showcasing local talent and unique, high-quality, handcrafted items, with the goal of giving you great brand exposure and the capacity for exponential sales!

Here are your options:

A.    10 x 10 ft space  = $125.00

B.    5 x 10 ft space  = $75.00                 

* You are responsible for the set up and display of your items (including tables, chairs, tents, etc.)

* You are responsible for the sales of your items.  

* You are obligated to participate in the full duration of the event (11am-10pm)

* The event will run rain or shine!

On top of what the BIA is already committed to doing, I will provide promotion and advertising via multiple social media platforms. In addition to this, vendors are encouraged to promote within their own networks to let your fans know where they can find your goods!

Also, if you know of other vendors who might be interested in participating, please share!

Time is of the essence here as I have had to move very quickly to put this plan into action.  I ask that you do the same and get back to me with your interest ASAP.  Spaces are limited and some are already taken!  Please don't hesitate to direct any questions and concerns my way.
