CALL FOR PROPOSALS: City of Toronto "Outside the Box" (Hand-painted Traffic Signal Boxes) Project

Deadline: Friday, May 8th, 2015, 5 pm

Please see full application guidelines (including details of confidentiality and copyright) on the website:www.toronto.ca/streetart/outsidethebox

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The City of Toronto invites local artists to submit proposals to create works of art on City traffic signal boxes throughout Toronto. There are over 2,200 traffic signal boxes located across Toronto. These boxes are often covered with posters and are a prime target for graffiti vandalism.

The Outside the Box public art initiative helps to create a vibrant, inclusive and interesting urban environment, reduces the impact of graffiti vandalism and postering, helps to beautify City infrastructure and streets, and supports local and emerging artists. Successful proposals will be innovative in design, counteract graffiti vandalism and contribute to a sense of community identity and pride.

This project is implemented by StreetARToronto, part of the City of Toronto's Transportation Services Division. Since the project's launch in 2013, 56 boxes have been hand-painted by local artists and transformed into works of art.

ARTIST FEE

The artist fee paid will be a $500 honorarium (including HST) for each completed traffic signal box.

LOCATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL BOXES

For 2015, Outside the Box aims to have 64 traffic signal boxes hand-painted by local artists.

14 of these boxes will be located within the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area, as part of a new pilot partnership project to increase the number of painted traffic signal boxes across the city.

A List of Locations on the website shows the locations of the boxes to be painted this year. If artists are interested in painting a particular box from the list, they should mention this in their application and describe how their design fosters a sense of identity for that specific location.

Please note that there is no guarantee that artists will be given their preferred location. The list of locations, as well as the total number of boxes to be painted, is subject to change at any time.

PAINTING WEEKS

For 2015, painting must take place in one of the two specified painting weeks:
  • WEEK 1: June 22-26, 2015
  • WEEK 2: August 17-21, 2015
A single traffic signal box generally takes two days to complete but is dependent on the intricacy of the design and other variables.

Artists must specify in their application when they will be available to paint. In some cases, depending on box location, some flexibility in painting dates may be required.

APPLICATION & DESIGN CRITERIA

  • Artist applicants must reside in the City of Toronto.
  • Use the template provided on the website (www.toronto.ca/streetart/outsidethebox) to propose your design concept(s). Be aware that some changes to the design may be required to accommodate site requirements. Designs must include all visible sides of the traffic signal box, unless where specified by the project team or on the list of box locations.
  • When designing the artwork, artists are encouraged to think of the context of the area and the city as a whole.
  • Designs must not contain:
    • any representations of traffic lights, signs or signals
    • advertisement or promotion for any business, product or viewpoint
    • vulgar, profane, offensive, or insensitive images or writing
    • any breach of intellectual property, trademarks, brands, images of illegal activity or involve the attachment of any object(s) to the box
  • Finished artwork will be in the public domain and therefore may be vandalized. Although the City protects the artwork with a graffiti-resistant clear coat, it cannot guarantee that vandalized traffic signal boxes will be repaired to their original state. Artists should understand that the boxes are live infrastructure that may need repair or replacement in future. The City cannot guarantee how long each traffic signal box will be in use. Artists must accept the risk that their artwork may be damaged, altered or removed at any time.
  • All designs will be subjected to City of Toronto review and approval.
  • Artist signature and website cannot occupy more than ¼ of the base unit

HOW TO APPLY

Artists must provide a completed application form (available on the website) and all attachments requested on the application form. The deadline for applications is Friday May 8, at 5 pm.

Artists may submit more than one design proposal along with a statement for each design. No artist will be selected for more than 2 traffic signal boxes per year.

Do not send any materials not specifically requested (i.e. transparencies, DVDs/videos, etc.). If sent, they will not be reviewed by the jury. Submissions will not be returned.

PLEASE EMAIL SUBMISSIONS TO streetart@toronto.ca or MAIL HARD-COPY SUBMISSIONS TO:

Program Manager, Outside the Box
StreetARToronto (StART)
City Hall, East Tower, 23rd Floor
100 Queen St. West
Toronto, M5H 2N2

NOTE: The City of Toronto assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged submissions. Application contents will not be returned. The City reserves the right to discontinue this call at any time.

ARTIST SELECTION AND PAINTING PROCESS
  • Applications must be received by Friday, May 8th, 2015, at 5 pm.
  • Applications will be reviewed by a jury composed of staff and external jurors. References will be checked.
  • Selected artists will be notified during the week of May 25th, 2015. They will be provided with their traffic signal box location and will be required to sign a service contract with the City of Toronto.
  • Painting must take place on WEEK 1 (June 22-28) or WEEK 2 (August 17-21), as specified in the artist's application (some flexibility may be required). Artists will receive information about where they can pick up their protective safety equipment in advance of their painting week.
  • Once painting is completed, boxes will be protected with a graffiti-resistant clear coat. Artists must accept the risk that their artwork may be damaged, altered or removed at any time after completion.

CANADIAN ART: EDITORIAL RESIDENCY

Call for Applications: 2015 Editorial Residency

Editorial and web staff at work at the Canadian Art office. Photo Stefanie Fiore.
We are now accepting applications for the 2015 Canadian Art Foundation Editorial Residency. The residency is a national prize awarded annually to a current undergraduate, graduate or other post-secondary student with an interest in developing expertise in the realm of professional art-magazine publishing. Now in its 11th year, the prize awards an 11-week summer residency at Canadian Art, along with a $7,000 prize. The winner will hone writing and editing skills while learning production procedures for online and print media atCanadian Art. This introduction to art-magazine publishing and writing is intended to foster new editorial and critical talent, and to provide hands-on experience working in the field.
The 2014 residency was won by emerging curator, writer and art-history student Natasha Chaykowski, who said of her experience:
Being the editorial resident at Canadian Art provided me with an unparalleled and rare opportunity to learn about the production of print media. Having only previously worked with online publications, I found this to be an incredibly formative and instructive experience. In addition to learning about magazine production, I was also able to further develop my writing style and hone editing skills—both of which are essential for working in publishing specifically, but also in the arts more generally. The skills I gained this summer at Canadian Art have already been and will continue to be proven invaluable.
To apply, send a 500-word review of a contemporary-art exhibition, a list of titles of recent academic and/or professional writing on art, a cover letter and a one-page CV.
Send applications to residency@canadianart.ca by 5 p.m. EDT on Thursday, April 2, 2015.

Douglas Coupland-themed Mini MOCCA workshops

March 1: 9:00am-11:00am
Canada in Collage!
What does Canada look like to you? Cut, tear, stick and paste together your own portrait of our nation. Using magazines such as Macleans, Canadian Living and more, participants will explore what our country looks like and create their own unique collages of that vision. What is Canada? What are some uniquely Canadian ‘secret handshakes?’ Participants will use a myriad of arts and crafts materials to explore what it means to be Canadian and make their own collage landscapes to take home. This workshop is led by artist Jacquelyn van Kampen and the Collage Collective.

March 22: 9:00am-11:00am
Colour Coupland: Make Your Own Sketchbook
What is a sketchbook for? How is a sketchbook like a diary? Participants will discuss these ideas and make their own unique sketchbook before practicing using everything from crayons to ink to markers and more. Let their imaginations fill its fresh new pages and then take the book home to explore their creativity further! This session is led by crafter and artist Steph Hung.

April 12: 9:00am-11:00am
Mini Modern Houses: Prints and Inks
Inspired by Coupland’s piece, 345 Modern Houses, participants will design the layout for their ideal room – whether it’s a kitchen, library, bedroom, or playroom – then turn it into an edition of handmade prints! Using printmaking materials and brightly coloured inks and papers, these floor plan prints will be traded amongst participants then arranged to explore and create possible configurations for a MOCCA Mini modern house. This workshop is led by artist Elizabeth Underhill.

April 19: 9:00am-11:00am
Utopian Tower Time
After a special access tour of Douglas Coupland: everywhere is anywhere is anything is everything, participants (and parents that secretly love lego) will look at famous buildings from across the country and then see how Coupland uses building blocks in his artwork. Then it’s time for participants to unleash their creativity and build their own dream constructions! Part architecture, part sculpture, part collaborative installation. Join the group as we create a complex and colourful utopian urban landscape!

ART SPIN: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2015

Call for Submissions

for the 2015 Art Spin season

Art Spin is gearing up for its seventh season this summer and is looking for exciting and imaginative submissions for its three tours starting in June 2015.
Art Spin is a curated bicycle tour of contemporary art in Toronto. Programming consists of commissioned, multi-disciplinary works, which range from art performances to installations, as well as visits to galleries (commercial, artist run & public) and to artists’ studios. Along with the monthly bike tours, Art Spin also curates and mounts an annual group exhibition at the end of each season which takes place in an alternative industrial space. Art Spin tours have become one of the city’s most anticipated events of the summer, attracting a diverse and enthusiastic audience of at least 300 people per tour.
Central to Art Spin’s mandate and a big part of what makes our tours so exciting is our commitment to transplanting encounters with art from conventional, institutional spaces into more alternative and public environments. We believe that encounters with art truly come to life in a meaningful and engaging way when they are experienced in a communal context, in unique site-specific locations.
In past years we have commissioned projects that have taken place in parking structures, empty lots, public parks, vacant factories and warehouses, alleyways, churches, schoolyards, community spaces, hockey rinks and construction sites.
With this in mind Art Spin is looking for artist’s submissions that are able to respond to their urban and cultural environment. Submissions for art projects from all disciplines (visual arts, installation, sculpture, film & video, new media, performance art, dance, theatre and music etc.) will be accepted but only those that embody a site-specific vision will be reviewed.  This can mean work that responds to an environment in either a geographic, architectural, culture, or historical manner.
Submissions that rely on a gallery type setting will not be accepted.
Successful submissions will be considered for one of the three tours taking place on: June 18th, July 23rdAugust 20th.  (All tours begin at 6:30 and run until roughly9:30pm).
Submissions for time-based projects should last no longer than 15 minutes.
Although we encourage site-specific proposals, locations and venues may be altered in collaboration with the artist in order to better accommodate our tour routes.
Artists should keep in mind the large number of participants on Art Spin tours. Projects that can be easily viewed/experienced by larger groups are more successful, as are interactive projects.
Artists' fees between $500 - $1000, depending on the scope of the project, will be awarded.
Submission Guidelines:
(please review carefully)
  • project description (500 word maximum in attached .doc or PDF format only)
  • up to 10 images (attached files under 1M each, jpg, tiff, png, or gif) of proposed project and/or past work
  • or, for time-based projects, please include no more than 5 minutes of video-support material (attached as mov, m4v or wmf formats or link to vimeo or youtube in your project description).
  • A mix of photo and video support material will be accepted as long as there are no more than 10 items total, and no more than 5 minutes total of video
  • an up-to-date CV/Resume (in attached .doc or PDF format only)
  • please submit proposals by e-mail to info@artspin.ca, due by Friday March 6th (inclusive) 2014.
  • e-mailed submission must be titled “Art Spin submission 2015” and follow the guidelines above. All text and image files should be attached, not embedded in your e-mail. If you have a link (for vimeo or youtube video only) please be sure to include it in your project description and not in the body of your e-mail.
We highly recommend having a look at past examples of projects featured on Art Spin tours if you have never attended one:

If you have any further questions about the submissions process, please don’t hesitate to contact us at info@artspin.ca.
