Call for Mural Proposals: “Just Us” Art Project 2023

Deadline: August 15th, 2023

This call invites concepts from street, mural and graffiti artists and artist collectives committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and inspiring positive change through who they are and the work they create. Project proposals should speak to historic and current social issues and movements within Black and Indigenous communities and equity deserving groups and the importance, benefits, and opportunities to build a better future through inclusion, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

The Salt Spring National Art Prize 

Deadline: May 31st, 2023

The Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP) is a biennial juried open competition focused on Canadian contemporary visual arts. Approximately fifty finalists are selected for the exhibition by an independent national jury. We invite all Canadian artists whose work exemplifies originality, quality, integrity, and creativity to submit work for consideration.

Call for Artists and Artisans: 2023 Queen West Art Crawl Festival

Deadline: May 31st, 2023 

The Queen West Art Crawl (QWAC) is a charitable corporation that drives a number of initiatives publicly benefiting artists and residents of Toronto through art, music, and multiculturalism, including a two-day multidisciplinary arts festival stretching along Queen Street West from Bathurst to Roncesvalles in Trinity Bellwoods Park in September of each year. With attendance at 20-25k, the Queen West Art Crawl has developed over the years into an inclusive arts and multicultural festival, while staying centered around its annual outdoor art exhibition.

2023 Annual International Mail-In Art Exhibition 

Deadline: April 30th 2023 

The Federation of Canadian Artists is providing this opportunity for artists from all over the world to exhibit for minimal cost and a chance to win prizes for their art. This year’s theme is ‘Recovery’ Submissions must be no bigger than 8" x 10" or 10" x 8" and must be unframed. Substrates can be no deeper than 4mm deep. We frame successfully juried pieces at our gallery.

Call for Facilitators of Creative Content: Nia Centre

Interested in facilitating art-based workshops for youth and young creatives?

The Nia Centre is looking for enthusiastic Art Facilitators to facilitate art-based workshops for our Beyond the Books: School Engagement Program. Looking for facilitators that can lead workshops across the following art mediums:

Klondike Institute of Art and Culture Artist in Residence Program 

Deadline: February 15th, 2023 

Description: Founded in 2001, in a partnership with Parks Canada, the KIAC Artist in Residence Program has welcomed over 300 talented artists, musicians and filmmakers to Dawson City from all regions of Canada and around the world.  The residence accommodates two artists concurrently for research, development and production of ongoing or new bodies of work.

KIAC accepts applications from visual artists, media artists and interdisciplinary artists, as well as curators. Consideration will be given to professional, established and emerging Canadian and international artists. All disciplines will be considered.

Video Fever 2023-  Open Call to All Ontario Post-Secondary Students

Description: Trinity Square Video and Vtape are seeking video works from undergraduate or graduate level students, who are currently enrolled at any Ontario-based post-secondary institution! Selected works will be part of a screening taking place in March 2023.

This is a professional, juried screening. All chosen artists will receive an IMAA screening fee and a free one-year production membership to Trinity Square Video. One selected winner will also receive a $500 cash prize sponsored by Vtape!

ArtMEETS: Hygge Edition PWYC online workshops for artists

Description: It’s back again – East End Arts is thrilled to announce that ArtMEETS is back this winter for its sixth year! Four workshops, all PWYC (Pay What You Can), and all about getting creative and beating the winter blues. ArtMEETS workshops are led by talented, engaging, and supportive artist facilitators, and each workshop is an opportunity for adults to learn a new art skill, meet new people, and let your creative side shine! Our hygge edition workshops are focused on getting cozy and crafty at home with simple supplies and tools. Workshops run on Saturday afternoons in February (four workshops total) from 1-4pm, online via Zoom. We are accepting a maximum of 20 participants per workshop, so register early for those that interest you!

Expression of Interest, Public Artwork for Overlea Boulevard and Bridge Renewal 

Deadline: March 14th 2023

Description: The City of Toronto invites professional artists (including artist teams) to submit their Expression of Interest to the first stage of a competition for integrated public artwork(s) as part of the redesign and replacement of the Overlea Boulevard Bridge and surrounding road work improvements.

The art component of this revitalized public space will be selected through an open two-stage competition, with a net budget of approximately $600,000. The project budget includes all costs directly associated with the artwork: all fees for design, fabrication, installation, engineering and professional services, insurance, travel and other incidental expenses.

Art Nest, Toronto Outdoor Art Fair (TOAF)

Deadline: January 16, 2023

Description: TOAF is seeking proposals for installation, sculpture, new media and performance art that are appropriate for an outdoor setting and related weather conditions.

Art Nest project provides emerging and equity-seeking artists with the opportunity to create their first public artworks in consultation with a curator and mentor during the Fair. The program provides artists with the experience, infrastructure, training and audience exposure needed to build confidence for future public art competitions and commissions.  Proposals should also account for visitor safety. All proposals are subject to approval by the City of Toronto. Show organizers will assign space at Nathan Phillips Square. 

An artist fee of $2,000 plus $2,000 for material costs will be paid to each selected artist.

Oeno Gallery’s Call for Sculpture 2023 

Deadline: February 6, 2023

Description: This outdoor sculpture garden invites artists to submit proposals for the garden’s 11th exhibition year. The property offers a wide variety of sites for placement. Areas to consider include the sculpture garden proper, the outdoor area by the wintery, the zone immediately surrounding the gallery, and the pond (limestone quarry). Proposals will be reviewed and selected by the gallery. Sculptures must be original, durable and safe for viewing by the public in an unsupervised natural area. They must be able to withstand extreme year-round weather conditions and tolerate strong winds. This includes rain, snow, wind and salty air. The work must also be available for sale. The artist is responsible for the transportation, installation and removal of their work in the event it does not sell. The World Illustration Awards 

Deadline: February 14, 2023 

Description: The World Illustration Awards are a year-round celebration of the power and diversity of illustration being made today. Selected entries are shared on the popular @worldillustrationawards Instagram. This is followed by the announcement in May of 500 longlisted projects, and then the release of the 200 shortlisted projects which will feature in an Online Showcase on the AOI’s website launching in July. A highlight of the Awards year is the excitement of the winners announcement in September. Description: Lumière: The Art of Light (formerly Winter Light Exhibition) is an acclaimed annual art event that will temporarily transform Trillium Park, the new home for the event in 2023. Description: The Artists’ Network is welcoming exhibition proposals from the visual arts community, curators, artists, collectives, working across a wide range of mediums to exhibit in its Leslie Grove Gallery during 2023.

Description: Pride Toronto is excited to announce that applications have now opened for their 2023 Festival for artists of all forms and mediums. Step Above Stigma Silent Auction

Deadline: February 13, 2022

Description: Step Above Stigma (SAS) is a registered mental health charity focused on empowering youth and young adults, facilitating systemic change, and eliminating stigma. SAS is hosting its upcoming Candid Conversations Coffee House at Beatrice Society Cafe (subject to change) on March 8th, 2023. They are looking for submissions of interest from artists to participate in the silent auction portion of this event. They are planning on running a silent auction throughout the night that features artwork by local artists. Artists may choose the starting bid and receive 70% of the purchase price, with the remainder retained as a donation to SAS. We are looking for art pieces that speak to individual experiences with mental health.

Love Letter to your Art Practice

Do you hold love for your art practice? How do you recognize it? How do you show it? A Love Letter to your Practice facilitated by Yasmeen Nematt Alla, invites artists, makers, and creatives to join us for a writing and meditation workshop to celebrate the love we hold for our art practices. For most of us, our practices have supported our passions, our livelihoods, and our mental health. We hope to spend time together gathering as we discuss ways to show care to the very things that push us forward.

Yasmeen Nematt Alla(she/her) is an Egyptian immigrant and settler living in Tkaronto, Turtle Island (colonially known as Toronto, Ontario). Her practice centres alienated collectivist narratives from an immigrant’s and an interpreter’s perspective. As someone who lives between cultures, she deciphers language barriers attached to togetherness through textiles, performance, and reactive sculptures that are often situated in social practice. She wonders how translation, experiences, and visuals intertwine with care, grief, and community building.

Akin Taxes for Artists Workshop

Tax season can be a particularly stressful and confusing time for artists, performers and other creatives. This workshop will help you get prepared! With decades of experience in accounting and taxation, Kelly Ross will spend an hour discussing some of the most important tax topics for artists including: tax preparation, deductions, tax deadlines, HST, how to handle grants, T4s and more. The session is suitable for artists who are new to filing taxes or those who are looking for a refresher. Facilitator: Kelly Ross is the Managing Director and CEO of Ross Professional Corporation. She is a member of CPA Canada leading with strength, knowledge and passion, having over 20 years of experience in accounting and taxation. Through her career she worked in a multi-national CPA firm, then moved on to be a subject matter expert for development of an accounting program at a college. Kelly’s interest and passion for accounting came from her mother whose career was in the accounting realm. Kelly has a love for the arts and entertainment industry, which stemmed from having a father who had talent and love for music. Kelly herself played the piano, trumpet and was a dancer through her early years. Now in her downtime, Kelly can be found around the hockey rinks supporting her daughter’s hockey team and following her nephews in their live band performances. She is truly a people person and has a special skill making everyone she meets feel special.

Call for Applications: Akin Studio Program at Auto BLDG 2022

Craving a space to grow your art practice? An opportunity to surround yourself with artists and other creatives? The Akin Studio Program applications are open and ready to accept our 2022 cohort!

The Akin Studio Program at Auto BLDG (158 Sterling Road) is a unique and publicly open opportunity for art practitioners, curators and writers to lease shared studio space within the historical Auto Building at 158 Sterling Road in Toronto. In addition to a studio space throughout 2022, selected artists will be immersed within a community of peers, offering various opportunities for engagement. Studio members will be encouraged to develop and expand their individual practices while playing a role in the artistic community within the studios itself.

Studio Membership Program Start Date: January 7 2022,
Studio Membership Program End Date: December 31, 2022.

While the focus for selected artists will be to use their studio spaces for independent practice, research and development, this is an inclusive, shared studio environment where artists will benefit from insight provided by not only their studio peers and guests but also through occasional opportunities as part of the broader Akin community. 

Selected artists will be encouraged to participate in four, quarterly/seasonal public ‘Open Studio’ events that will occur across the studio program space(s) throughout 2022. This may include opportunities to present a workshop or artist talk at one of these specific events, for those that are interested.

Akin is thrilled to be partnering with BigArtTO as part of ArtworxTO this fall with three projections happening at Summerville Pool (1867 Lake Shore Blvd E at Woodbine Ave), Etobicoke Civic Centre (Burnhamthorpe Rd at The West Mall) and Piccininni Community Centre (St Clair Ave W & Lansdowne Ave). We intend to select four artists per site, to have their artwork projected onto these buildings. Akin is inviting all current or alumni Akin Members who live or work in the City of Toronto to submit one artwork for consideration responding to the theme of “The Echoes of Community”. We would love to know: How do collective and community rooted experiences radically reimagine art practices? How does ancestral knowledge of the past and the future inspire our making? What is revolutionary about community ties and how do we utilize those connections to upend oppressive systems? Existing work or sketches / renderings of proposals for new work will be accepted. Images of the final artworks may be included in marketing materials. Please indicate on your application if you would like to be considered for a specific projection site. Your location preference will be considered by the jury. However, the overall consistency of the selected projects will be prioritized. Artists will be selected for one of the three locations.  

Submission deadline: Friday September 3rd 2021 *Extended to September 7th 2021

There are three locations where these activations will take place:

Co-Living Survey - Call for Input - Deadline July 27th & August 13th 2021

The opportunity to participate in the creation of a series of co-living style apartments may be available to Akin, and we would love your thoughts on what this should look like. Co-living is when a tenant lives in an apartment that shares certain amenities with other tenants in the building. For example, a tenant may live in a one bedroom apartment with a private bedroom and living room but with the bathroom and kitchen shared with other tenants in the building. As would be the case here, these types of rental units are often able to be offered at a more affordable rental rate than other units in the area of similar sizes while also allowing for a focus on community amongst the residents.

We are very interested in exploring this concept further, as it may offer access to affordable housing for artists in the City of Toronto. Completing this survey, as well as providing any additional feedback that you feel comfortable sharing with us, would be appreciated and will influence our consideration of the project. We have certain ideas that we’re thinking about, but are very open around this concept and really want to hear from you, our community, in order to learn about your needs and desires for your housing situation in Toronto. Please note, while the feedback received from these survey questions will help to inform the design of this space (hoping that it comes to fruition), the layout has not yet been determined.

The survey consists of 35 questions and as such should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. If you’re able to complete the survey by July 27th at 12pm you will have the opportunity to enter an early bird draw to win a $50.00 gift card to a local shop or restaurant of your choosing. For those who respond after July 27th (and before the survey ends on August 13th), you will have the opportunity to enter for a chance to win a $25.00 gift card to a local restaurant or shop of your choosing.

CreateSpace Webinar: Digitizing Your Art

Hear from artists Yung Yemi and Samar Hejazi and learn how to document your work, present it digitally, and share it virtually.

Do you know how to leverage your experience as an artist working in public spaces after the installation and performance ends?

Digitizing your art through photography and sharing your creation process helps make your work interactive and available online to those who can’t experience it in person. Hear from artists Adeyemi Adegbesan (AKA Yung Yemi) and Samar Hejazi and learn how to document your work, present it digitally, and share it virtually in this 1.5 hour hour webinar that will support artists of all disciplines who exhibit their work in public spaces, through shared learnings about documenting your work.

Kasahara Gabriola Trust and the Gabriola Arts Council is seeking applications for the inaugural residency program from artists working in a wide range of disciplines. Residencies are four months in length and take place on Gabriola Island, BC, the Isle of the Arts. Gabriola Island is a Gulf Island located in the Salish Sea and is a 20 minute ferry ride from Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island.

The Kasahara Gabriola Trust Residency is accepting applications from artists at all stages of their career emerging artists (artists pursuing education within arts field) or established, practicing artist with a demonstrated body of work in a professional artistic environment. Artists within a variety of artistic disciplines will be accepted. The residency provides a live/workspace on an inspirational and intimate island setting, allowing artists the opportunity to imagine, create, experiment, develop new ideas, and ultimately a new body of work. The Kasahara Gabriola Trust Residency is a self-directed retreat, with opportunity for professional development, while giving the local community access to a diverse range of arts practices, theories and experiences.
Gabriola Arts Council is strongly committed to fostering diversity within our organization and art community. At the end of the residency the artist is expected to present a gallery show, performance piece, reading, or appropriate sharing of the body of work completed during the residency, to the community. Gallery space/outdoor space/performance space will be provided, and all promotional activities will be provided by the Gabriola Arts Council.

Xpace Cultural Centre is accepting submissions for artwork and writing from emerging artists, designers and writers for a group exhibition tentatively titled, “the way you look tonight” curated by Philip Leonard Ocampo. The exhibition will run from January 15th  – February 13th, 2021.

From the Civil Rights movement of the 1970s, to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, nostalgia has the capacity to eclipse the complicated, often painful realities of the historic events that had transpired during these times; the lens of retrospect can sometimes only preserve that which is amiable or enjoyable about these time periods. If the word nostalgia derives from the Greek word nostos (‘return home’) and algos (‘pain’), “the way you look tonight” seeks to embody the term’s etymological origins through exploring nostalgia as a complex method of both remembering and forgetting. In questioning the ways in which historic decades are preserved and romanticized within the collective consciousness and popular culture, this exhibition asks: 

• What histories are obscured and erased in treasuring that which is glamorous, entertaining and marketable about the past? Inversely, how are historic experiences of struggle sensationalized and commodified when seen through a retrospective lens?

• How is the recalling of previous decades a matter of generational experience (or lack thereof)?

• How do we frame the histories that we’re ancestrally connected to, but never lived?

• How can we consider the iconography of various time periods outside of the North American canon of popular culture?

• How are members of marginalized communities affected by the way that history is documented, archived and remembered?

• How might these contemporary times be remembered, forgotten or obscured in the future?

As this exhibition will manifest in part as an online project, this call is interested in works that utilize  text, poetry, illustration, drawing / painting, animation, video, archival materials and/or other ways of making that use of digital platforms advantageously in addition to sculpture, installation, etc.

This exhibition will prioritize artists that are Indigenous, Black, people of color, women, 2SLGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and members of other marginalized communities.

COVID-19 has created crisis and instability across the world. During this volatile time, with most of us stuck in place, the mail offers us metaphorical transport out of our immediate physical spaces. Mail can travel while we cannot. In response, Propeller Art Gallery is creating an open call Mail Art Exhibition in January with all works available for sale unless otherwise noted by the artist. This creative outlet for the community will serve as a physical artefact of the time we are living through, and recognises that, while many of our interactions have moved to the virtual realm, there is also increased interest in making things by hand.

You are invited to make a piece of Mail Art: art that can travel through the mail with a stamp.

What is Mail Art?

The Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus defines mail art as "works produced by artists, often in postcard format, specifically intended to be mailed to other artists or be displayed in an exhibition."

Mail art began in the 1960s when artists sent postcards inscribed with poems or drawings through the post rather than exhibiting or selling them through conventional commercial channels. Its origins can be found in Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters and the Italian futurists. But it was the New York artist Ray Johnson who, in the mid 1950s, posted small collages, prints of abstract drawings and poems to art world notables giving rise to what eventually became known as the New York Correspondence School. Mail art can take a variety of forms including postcards, packages, faxes, emails and blogs. In the 1960s the Fluxus artist On Kawara sent telegrams to friends and family that informed them he was alive. In the mid 1990s, the artist and curator Matthew Higgs set up Imprint, which posted art by young British artists, among them Martin Creed, to critics and curators. David Opdyke “this land” altered vintage postcards and combined them into large scale works and the list goes on.

What emotions are you feeling, and how are you coping? What is one thing you want to remember from this time, or one thing you want to forget? What do you hope for in the future when “normal” resumes? What are you looking forward to? What feels just out of reach? What have you gained through this experience? What has been a surprise to you?

This is an unjuried show, as you, the artists are collectively our curators. Although historically some Mail Art initiatives have been without submission fees, Propeller, as a Members-run non-profit gallery since 1996 that receives no arts council funding, it is necessary to request a submission fee in order to present Mail Art: unlimited Dada.

Open Call: Undergraduate and Graduate student artists working in and responding to a question of identity and individuality in a context of the Future-Present (democratized surveillance, weaponized branding, mobilized e-motions, and mythological realities).

XPACE/IMAGES festival is seeking proposals from student artists who are interested in responding to a question of the Future-Present. One could think of the term “Future-Present” as being a condition in which our dreams of the future collide with the reality of the present and where the real and imagined world are as one after the idealized World of Tomorrow has been dissolved. We live in a world that integrates technology with daily life, causing physiological and psychological shifts, giving us a kind of cybernetic lens in which to view the world. A lens that not only affects the way we think about ourselves and the world but also the images we use to represent that world. Now that peoples, places, and things are all accessible at the click of a button, what does it mean to be an individual in our contemporary condition and how are our identities formed? Proposals should consider the space the artwork occupies, the media used and its relationship to the subject in question, and a thorough understanding of the relative condition being: the Future-Present. Proposals are encouraged to be innovative and critical but also visually stimulating and sensorially provocative.

Hamilton Artists Inc. (The Inc.) is seeking dynamic proposals from artists, collectives, curators and writers at various stages of their careers for its exhibition platforms and public programs. The Inc. exhibits a range of artistic disciplines and welcomes applications by artists from local, regional and national communities. As an artist-run centre, we are interested in works/projects that push boundaries and engage with critical, conceptual and/or experimental thinking from diverse perspectives. We are committed to providing platforms for risk-taking and creating an inclusive space for exploring expanded art practices. Artist Project's COVID-19 Studio Relief Grant

Artist Project’s COVID-19 Studio Relief Grant will be awarding one emerging contemporary artist in a visual arts field with a $1,000 Akin studio credit, along with a $1,000 honorarium to offset arts supplies and day-to-day costs.

The COVID-19 Studio Relief Grant was envisioned to provide an opportunity for an emerging contemporary artist who has been impacted by the pandemic to look forward to having a creative space among their peers unburdened by access, rental costs and supply costs.  Artist Project is looking to support an emerging artist whose practice has been impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis; through loss of income, studio space, cancelled exhibition opportunities or delayed education opportunities.

The artist selected must be available for a filmed in-studio visit including an interview on their practice and process. The artist will receive promotion through Artist Project’s e-mail, website and social media marketing platforms.

Who may apply?

Artist Project’s COVID-19 Studio Relief Grant  is open to emerging contemporary artists working in a visual arts field. For the purposes of this residency an emerging artist is defined as an artist who is currently attending or a recent graduate (3 years) of a visual arts education program, with no commercial gallery representation, and a modest exhibition history over the past 3 years.

There is no fee to apply, however applications will be limited to the first 200 entrants.

Akin is Hiring! Indigenous Space Advisor

Introduction
Akin is a Toronto-based, artist-run social enterprise located on Ancestral Wendat territory and the territory of the Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee, providing affordable studio space to nearly 350 artists in its 10 locations and programs roughly 50 arts-based events per year across the city. Akin is run by artists, and is dedicated to providing a working environment that maintains a friendly and inspiring atmosphere where people can work on creative endeavours and entrepreneurial undertakings of all kinds. Akin builds community through monthly art critiques, workshops, open studio events, gallery tours, exhibitions, as well as various other art projects.

We are currently seeking an individual to assist in assessing the needs of emerging Indigenous artists in this area, in order to start a discussion around what our organization can offer this community in terms of meaningful support.

The Role
In collaboration with Indigenous Elder Artist in Residence Catherine Tammaro (Taǫmęˀšreˀ), Anti-oppressive Practice Consultant, Equity & Social Justice Educator Rania El Mugammar and Akin’s team, we are looking to continue our ongoing work towards understanding our treaty obligations in Toronto by hiring a consultant to guide us in meaningful, actionable engagement with the Indigenous community while assessing needs and opportunities for the next phase of our work in better supporting Indigenous artists. This work would include researching and identifying suitable funding opportunities to support ongoing work (public etc), designing and facilitating community conversations to ensure input from diverse Indigenous communities, work collaboratively with Akin staff and advisors to complete preliminary grant applications and compiling a final report on work completed which may be shared publicly if all parties agree.

Duration: Approximately 6 weeks (Flexible, Work remotely)
Compensation: $2,000.00 (40hrs at $50/hr, 50% in advance, and 50% upon completion)


Process
Given the scope and focus of this role, we require the chosen candidate to have lived experience as an Indigenous person and involvement in the local art community as an artist or arts worker will be considered an asset.

Adapting the Toronto Arts Council’s Equity Priority Group Policy, applicants who self-identify as belonging to one (or more) of Toronto Arts Council’s Equity Priority Groups (Persons of Colour, Deaf Persons, Persons with Disabilities and Persons Living with Mental Illness, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQIAP) will all be prioritized in addition to our preference for Indigenous candidates. We encourage applications from these communities and will endeavour to accommodate job applicants with a disability during the hiring process in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code guidelines and other applicable legislation.

This effort is part of an ongoing commitment to anti-oppressive practices, equity and inclusion at Akin and an effort to engage diverse communities and artists in our organization and across our programs- this includes Anti-Oppression training and the development of a revised Code of Conduct and needs assessment strategies.

Since 2011, STEPS has supported Business Improvement Areas  (BIA), community groups, and social service agencies across the GTA in realizing projects that foster vibrant public spaces and encourage diverse participation in arts based initiatives.

Do you have a community project that you’re struggling to launch?

A place you’ve identified for public art but are unsure how to make it happen? 

An identified cultural programming gap in your community, but not sure how to fill it?

We want to hear your project idea!

If you’re a non arts-based community group, STEPS may be able to help you through: 

• sharing our knowledge and expertise in project management, partnership development, public outreach, program facilitation, artist recruitment, design development, onsite production and community engagement.

• supporting a lead organization in funding requests through identifying opportunities, grant proposal coaching, and providing letters of support.

• leveraging our relationships within the cultural sector in order to identify collaborating artist(s)/ artistic facilitators/ documentarians who may be a fit for a project.

• integrating capacity building opportunities within the proposed project for host agencies and/or area residents.

This is NOT A GRANT PROGRAM. We strive to lend support, knowledge, and capacity to projects that may not come to fruition without a strong and experienced community partner. Interested?

Akin Vitrine Galleries 2020 Exhibitions - Call for Submissions for Akin Studio Members

Akin is very excited to announce our 2019 Call for Submissions for Akin’s Vitrine Gallery! We are programming for the coming year and looking to fill our monthly exhibitions with a variety of work from our studio members. 

These miniature galleries feature the diverse talent of our members with new installations each month. The first Akin Vitrine Gallery launched in 2016 at Akin’s Dupont studios. At the beginning of 2018, the second Vitrine Gallery location launched at the Akin St. Clair studios.

APPLICATION DETAILS:

Deadline to apply: Monday, December 2nd, 2019, 5:00pm

Akin will program 12 exhibitions in 2020, each for a duration of two months. Featured artists will be exhibiting for one month in our Dupont Vitrine location and for the following month in our St. Clair Vitrine location.  

The first month of the exhibition will be at the Akin St. Clair Vitrine gallery location (1747 St. Clair Avenue West), corresponding with a month-long online feature on Instagram. Akin Vitrine Gallery Instagram account: @akinvitrine showcases the current artist in a spotlight interview style, month-long series of posts. Make sure to check out the account for more information, to follow us and support your fellow Akin members!

The second month of the exhibition will be at the Akin Dupont Vitrine gallery location (1485 Dupont St). In addition to this, each featured artist is welcome to organize, host and promote a reception during their exhibition at the Akin St. Clair Studios Vitrine. They will work with the Akin St. Clair studio manager on the logistics for their reception, but be responsible for planning and hosting their reception themselves. 

This call for submissions welcomes fine artists of all mediums, craftspeople, designers and those whose work expands the limits of these mediums to apply; we only ask that your project reads as visual art as opposed to a window display/merchandising. Please note this call is only open to Akin studio members from any of our nine locations.

• Project description: due to the timeline of our programming, it is not imperative that you apply with finished work. If you are applying with a concept not yet realized, please provide a description of your project in one paragraph. Sketches for the project or photographs of similar work are preferred.  

• Up to 3 images of the work to be exhibited, or similar if you are applying with a work in progress.  Images must be titled: FULLNAME_TITLE_SIZE_MEDIUM_DATE

• Brief bio/statement (maximum 150 words).

• Contact information – including phone number, website and Instagram username if available.

• Requested month for exhibition - if you have a particular month in which you would prefer to show, please let us know what that month is and why. We will consider all requests but cannot guarantee we can accommodate them all.

Our goal is to curate a cross-section of work, representing a variety of media from all of our studio locations. This does mean that space is limited. We appreciate all of your submissions, and what we can’t accommodate for this project, we will keep in mind for future opportunities. We will respond to submissions via email.

About the Vitrine spaces:
The miniature galleries feature white walls, floor and ceiling, overhead lighting, electrical access and large window. The Vitrines lend themselves well to 2D hanging work, 3D display and site specific pieces, and are a perfect space to experiment with new materials and to try out new work or installation projects.

Artist Project in partnership with Akin invites member artists to a cinq à sept meet and greet with the Artist Project team. Complimentary drinks and canapes will be provided.

As Canada’s largest artist exhibited fair, Artist Project exists to create an environment that ignites enriching conversation for a more personal experience with art.

Join over 300 talented, independent, contemporary artists in showcasing and selling their work to over 16,00 art lovers and collectors this February 20-23rd at the Better Living Centre.

Applications close September 20th for the following sections of the fair;

MAIN
The fairs premier section of emerging or established artists working across many disciplines.

UNTAPPED
Untapped Emerging Artists is a juried competition that awards 20 of the country's best up-and-coming artists an opportunity to participate in a dedicated feature space at the fair.

ZINE
Introduced to the fair in 2019, the Zine section features 10-12 artists and art collectives.

Artist Project is also excited to welcome back Akin as our Non-Profit partner in 2020 as we work to further promote issues fundamental to current art practices and fundraise to help Akin with their ongoing programming and studio space efforts.

Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre Public Art Competition

Artists/artist teams are invited to submit proposals for a one-stage competition to provide a site-specific work of public art that combines an artistic vision with functionality for an outdoor seating installation at Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre, Kitchener, Ontario. The competition is open to all emerging and established artists/teams residing in Canada. Each artist(s)/team is limited to one entry. 

Location:

The Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre is located in the southwest corner of the city at 150 Pioneer Park Drive, on the territory of Six Nations on the Haldimand Tract, near the majestic Grand River.  This area is forecasted to be the fastest growing neighbourhood in Kitchener over the next 20 years.  

People who visit and live here value the walkability of nearby trails, and a variety of wildlife in the area.  Residents describe Doon as a great place to live because of the “small town” feel.  One family says:  “It feels like a small community as there is still a divide between Doon and the rest of Kitchener in terms of transportation and the surrounding industrial lands”.

Digital Project Funding Opportunity: The Creation Accelerator

The Canada Council for the Arts and CBC/Radio-Canada are teaming up to offer The Creation Accelerator, an exciting opportunity for Canadian artists to develop an original concept and create a digital project for potential distribution on CBC/Radio-Canada’s platforms. 

Pitch your idea for a podcast, web series, short doc, sound art, digital graphic novel, experimental dance video, animation, and more and receive up to $50,000 in funding! No prior digital experience is required.

Individuals who are Deaf or who have disabilities, including those living with mental illness, and require accommodation at any stage of the application process may be eligible for additional assistance.

Deadline – 16 October 2019
Notification of results – January 2020

There are two Phases to The Creation Accelerator: Phase 1 is a development phase, while Phase 2 is a production phase. In Phase 1, the Canada Council for the Arts will provide up to 20 successful applicants with grants of up to $50,000 each. CBC/Radio-Canada will provide grant recipients with an orientation to digital creation. CBC/Radio-Canada will also pair successful applicants with an independent producer or approve a producer identified by the recipient.
