Gallery 1313 Summer Rentals

Gallery 1313 in Toronto has some Summer rental availability in July & August in both the Main & the Process Gallery. Interested artists should email director@g1313.org with proposals including images. The Main Gallery has over 135ft of running wall and is about 1200 sq. ft. (good for group exhibits) while the Process Gallery has about 33 ft. of running wall which is good for smaller solo exhibits, video works or installations. There is also some availability in the Fall for the Process Gallery. More details are on the website or call Phil Anderson 416-536-6778. Gallery 1313 also has availability for new members.

Visuals Initiative of South Asia (V.I.S.A.) - Arts Festival would like to invite Artists from across Canada to make digital submissions for their annual Art Festival and Exhibition - “Creative & Cultural Celebrations” aimed at promoting South Asian Art. V.I.S.A. - Arts Festival is a curated exhibition and welcomes all levels of local and regional artists across Canada. V.I.S.A intend exhibiting a variety of two and three-dimensional art across all media including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, textiles, sculpture and mixed media. Expressive Arts Therapy Training Program

The Create Institute offers a verity of training programs in Expressive Arts Therapy. The program is designed to immerse students in an intensive, arts-based educational process that is beneficial for their professional development as expressive arts therapists, as well as for their personal and creative growth. The curriculum includes experiential, practical and theoretical training both in class and as offered through a variety of practicum placement sites.

COOL - THE ARTIC OUTSIDERS June 29th to September 1st 2017 Norway’s Museum for Outsider Art

Akin member Jordan MacLachlan's upcoming show COOL – THE ARCTIC OUTSIDERS will open June 29th Norway’s Museum. The exhibit will take place in a new gallery in the center of Harstad during The Northern Norway Festival. MacLachlan, was invited to exhibit her clay vignettes at the festival along with works from other participating Arctic countries: Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

Marius (above) depicts the dispassionate response of visitors watching the matter-of-fact killing of the giraffe at the Copenhagen Zoo in 2014. Eighteen-month old Marius was a healthy, but genetically unsuitable, giraffe who was fed his favourite breakfast before he was shot, chopped up, and fed to the lions. MacLachlan’s work bears witness to humanities complex relationship with animals.

Day Trip Opening Reception June 10th

Gallery 555 opens a new exhibition June 10th 2-5, featuring the work of 8 Toronto based painters, the exhibition explores themes related to leisure and impermanence. The artists explore these themes through various strategies including depicting the nuanced relationship between humans and their environment in the experience of  leisure, the enjoyment and exploitation of nature, depictions of fantastical and manufactured landscapes, and through the tradition of nature-morte and the impermanence of the human experience.  

Working in a range of traditions from abstraction to still-life to surrealism to expressionism the works in the exhibition range  in use of materials from traditional oil paints, to tree bark, to sparkles and inkjet, to wax and carbon pencil and more.

Sonic Reflections

New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) invites artists of all ages and nationalities to submit works on the theme Sonic Reflections for consideration in New Adventures in Sound Art’s 2018 programming. Sound by its nature reflects in different ways depending on the environment in which it is experienced. These reflections help to give a place its character but they also can obscure elements of an environment. NAISA would like to celebrate the opening of its new facility - NAISA North Media Arts Centre - in South River Ontario with programming that is reflective of the past as well as using that reflection to inform future possibilities. For its 2018 programming, NAISA is interested in submissions that address the notion of Sonic Reflections and creative ways that this can be shared.
 

Art Gallery of Burlington – Ceramic Courtyard Exhibition

Deadline: June 30, 2017
The Annual Courtyard Installation at the AGB is a site specific installation of ceramic work (some mixed media is permitted as long as the work is primarily ceramic), that reflects some aspect of the space, ranging from the architecture, to the plantings, to the social interaction contained within the space. The artist is encouraged to engage with the water feature and is asked that much of the work is installed on the ground cover and the walls. This exhibition space is used as a public area within the building, including a space for people to eat lunch, private receptions and weddings; the artist is asked to consider that the installation does not interfere with these other uses. This five-week program will explore several global Indigenous perspectives on architecture, traditional design methodologies, and materials. 2017 Toronto West Arts Collective CNE Juried Art Show - Call for Artists

This call for submissions is open to all citizens and residents of Canada over the age of 18 working in the following categories: Acrylic/Oil, Watercolour & Other Media, and Photography. This annual fine art contest and exhibit awards the brightest and best artists working in Canada. Support Reggie Rainbow - A Story Planet Project

Reggie Rainbow is no ordinary kid's book! This beautiful picture book was the result of a collaboration between 12 author/illustrators-in-training aged 10 and author/illustrator Hilary Leung. Together, over 6 weeks at Story Planet, they brainstormed, created, wrote, drew and edited. 

The kids who created this book did not think of themselves as 'creative' or 'writers'. Some of them had never made up a story before. They came from 4 different schools to Story Planet because their teachers thought this workshop would give them the kind of creative boost they deserved. Now their book is ready to be published into the gorgeous, full colour, hard cover book they dreamed of and all we need is your help to finally get their story out into the universe!

Luis Jacob 'Habitat' at Gallery TPW until June 10

Less than a week left to check out 'Habitat' by Luis Jacob, a part of CONTACT Photography Festival at Gallery TPW. Join the artist on June 10 in conversation with Jorge Ribalta, artist, researcher, editor and independent curator from 2-4pm for a reading and discussion as Jorge Ribalta reflects on his recent curatorial work on historical photography exhibitions and the construction of the poetic, epistemic, and political meanings of a public photographic sphere.

'Habitat' presents new work by artist Luis Jacob, who is known for his practice that destabilizes conventions of looking to highlight the socio-political dimensions of the visual world. Anchoring the exhibition is Album XIV, constructed of hundreds of images cut from books and magazines and displayed as an extended sequence without identifying captions or context. The work features images of city planning, abstract art, and references to forms of spectatorship, including the work of various Toronto artists and particular moments in the city’s development. 

More than a chronicle of Toronto’s visual history, Habitat queries the relationship of the city’s culture to its economic life and its forms of self-identity (both projected and submerged). The exhibition continues Jacob’s role as a renegade semiotician—an artist whose reordering of images exerts conscious and unconscious pressure on the ways that people assign, experience, and reconfigure meaning.

Jill Smith’s recent body of work, Accumulations, explores the construction and decoration of environments, and how we engage with spaces both real and otherwise- often nonsensical, curious places. Smith not only explores the relationship between various objects in a scene, often rooted in domesticity or referencing still lives, but what it also means to provide a window into another setting through a practice involving sculpture, screen printing and more. Bodily, charming, playful and whimsical the artist takes us to another place- one that is strange yet somehow personal and familiar, odd yet somehow comforting.

The Thesis Award Show is a collaboration between ARTiculations, Graven Feather Studio and Akin Collective in support of graduating post secondary students. In spring 2017 a call was sent out across the Province for applications in search of students demonstrating a coherent body of work unique in both concept and execution. Overwhelmed by the response, we extend a huge thank you to all of the applicants and congratulate this year’s winners, Jill Smith and Kimberly Danielson for their achievements. In addition to solo exhibitions, Smith and Danielson each received a one week print residency with Graven Feather, and a studio credit with Akin Collective as part of the award.

Today, interest in natural dyes is undergoing a global revival, fueled by a growing awareness of the harmful by-products of the industrial dye process, and a greater understanding of the environmental issues relating to textile production. A new generation of environmentally conscious artists and designers are exploring the use of natural dyes while re-examining regional production, often within the context of a “DIY” approach to life and work. 

Chromatic Geography examines these new trends, and presents a diversity of approaches to the use of natural dyes, from scientific research and raw material development, to innovative, contemporary applications in craft, fashion, design and art, with personal approaches to materials and aesthetics.

The opening reception will feature a live demonstration by Laura Sansone with her Mobile Textile Lab, demonstrating how to extract natural dye colour from plants. These dye solutions will then become part of the Chromatic Geography exhibition, providing a solar dye system in the front window of the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.  As well, a member of Upper Canada Fibreshed will be in the gallery demonstrating hand spinning, using Ontario-grown fleece dyed with natural dyes.

'Long Road' by Laura Kay Keeling - New installation in the Akin Vitrine Gallery for the month of June

Akin is excited to present June’s Vitrine Gallery exhibition, ‘Long Road’ by Akin Dupont member, Laura Kay Keeling! 

“Long Road references a road trip taken in June 2016 which began in Vancouver with stops in Seattle, Portland, road side spots in Washington State and ended in Kelowna. These images were all taken on expired 35mm slide film along the highway in Washington State. Once developed, these images all had a really interesting and vibrant post-apocalyptic vibe to them which I found was an interesting backdrop to have against the natural environment that exists around us. During this trip, it was quite breathtaking to see how rapidly the environment around us would change. There were moments when the highway was the only thing separating a desert like scene on our left and lush rolling hills of farmland to our right.” 

Travels, daydreams, field guides, coffee and film. Laura Kay Keeling resides in Toronto, ON and pulls inspiration from beautiful everyday moments shared through her photography and collage work. She is currently working on a 'HOT ROCKS' series of collages which are composed of gemstone cut outs from old field guides. “I’ve always been drawn to extreme environments, things that come from nature. As a kid, I was obsessed with gemstones, they’re all so beautiful in their own unique way. I’m blown away that these exist around us. I like the idea of taking something that is inherently beautiful, pulling it apart and then putting it back together”

AKIN OSSINGTON: Akin Announces New Light Industrial Studios

Akin is thrilled to announce the launch of two new studio spaces at 888 Dupont Street on the north-east corner of Ossington and Dupont. This location will be Akin's first studios dedicated to providing workspace for light industrial art making, with new members moving in at the end of this month.

Expanding on its twelve current studios located at 444 Dufferin Street, 87 Wade Avenue, 100 Sunrise Avenue and 1485 Dupont Street, Akin's new spaces will offer a range of affordable studios in various sizes and set ups for light industrial use.

Akin will develop programming specific to this unique new space in addition to our current range of workshops, studio critiques, gallery crawls, community programs and skill shares.

This exciting expansion will increase Akin’s size to approximately 22,000 square feet of studio space serving nearly 200 artists, enabling it to meet the ever-increasing demand for affordable workspace.

Since opening its first modest space almost 9 years ago, Akin has striven to make being an artist in the city a more fun and financially viable vocation. Now more than ever, we feel our role is an important one for Toronto's cultural community and our artists as we ensure that there is always space to create.

Akin's new 'Akin Ossington' location will be easily accessible by subway, streetcar, bus, bike, or car. By transit, visitors can access the studios by a short bus ride from Ossington subway station, or along the 26 Dupont bus route.

All rentals include 24/7 access to the studios, taxes, insurance, wifi, access to communal working areas as well as storage, kitchen, and bathroom.

Akin Sunrise invites you to join us as we visit our neighbors at The Ismaili Centre and the Aga Khan Museum for a day of learning, inspiration, exploration and fun!

Participation is limited, please register in advance at www.universe.com/agakhan - price includes a guided tour of the Ismaili Centre and admission to both institutions.

We will meet at the Ismaili Centre (situated just north of Eglinton off Don Mills Road) at 12:30pm for a guided tour. The tour will last approximately 1 hour. We will then walk to the Aga Khan museum where we will have a brief introduction to the museum from the museum staff then you can explore to your heart’s content! (Museum closes at 6pm).

You are also invited to join us prior to the tour at 11am near the infinity pools for a picnic (bring your own picnic). The picnic is optional, but you are encouraged to explore and enjoy the Aga Khan Park and Museum courtyard before or after our visit to the Museum.

Diana Bahr is an OCAD U graduate in Drawing & Painting (2016), and former OCAD U staff from the Financial Aid department where she provided financial literacy and professional practice workshops to student artists and designers for five years. She has a master’s degree in education from the University of Toronto, and is an emerging multi-disciplinary artist based in the east end of the city. Diana has exhibited her work at various locations including a traveling show in New York, the Ontario Science Centre, the Brain Project in Toronto, and Mercedes Benz in Mississauga. She is currently co-organizing and participating in a six-month artist residency program, creating work for a show in the fall.

Congratulations to Yasmin Nurming-Por, winner of the 2017 Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators

Congratulations to Yasmin Nurming-Por of Toronto for being awarded the 5th annual Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators, a national prize awarded annually to a young curator demonstrating social innovation and curatorial excellence. Yasmin's project, My curiosities are not your curios, has been selected as the winning submission that will be presented at the Art Gallery of Guelph from September 14 - December 17, 2017.

The exhibition will examine what it means to collect objects through the work of artists for whom collecting is a creative practice. Nurming-Por has selected contemporary artists from across North America whose “collections” address the politics of display, exploring how these systems can also be used to present alternative narratives.

WHAT IS IT?

The Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition (TOAE) is Canada's largest, longest running juried contemporary outdoor art fair. Founded in 1961, Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition was established to nurture artistic excellence and artists’ entrepreneurial spirit, and to showcase contemporary art to the general public. This free public event showcases works by over 320 contemporary visual artists and makers, ranging in medium from painting, photography, and mixed media to jewellery and ceramics, and attracts 100,000 visitors each year to Nathan Phillips Square.This year TOAE runs from July 14-16th!

The Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition is only made possible by our amazing volunteers. We are tremendously grateful for your time and dedication to the exhibition! Akin Projects and The Toronto Art Book Fair invite you to attend a special edition of the Akin Gallery Crawl. Join us as we visit galleries and spaces that are showcasing and celebrating artists' books and printed matter featuring highlights from Toronto Art Book Week. Everyone welcome!

1. Meet at The Public at 12:30pm. (58 Lansdowne Ave)

2. Visit Xpace Cultural Centre (303 Lansdowne Ave, Unit 2)

3. Visit Souvenir Studios (1232 College Street)

4. Visit Akin Lansdowne for a studio tour followed by a visit to Towards Gallery (87 Wade Ave)

5. Visit Akin Dupont(1485 Dupont St) and view the Akin Vitrine Gallery with artist talk by Laura Kay Keeling

6. Anyone with energy left is encouraged to visit Zalucky Contemporary (3044 Dundas St West) for the book launch for "Some Theories" by Kathryn Mockler and David Poolman. Please note this is not an official stop on the Akin Gallery Crawl but is about a 20 minute walk from our final stop at Akin Dupont.

(Those without the energy for Zalucky Contemporary can join the rest of us on a nearby patio for a drink!)
